About Us
It was a dreary March day (one when knitting is at the top of the list) when the spark of starting a yarn shop was first mentioned. It had been a blow to all of us fiber lovers when the local source, Kindred Threads, had recently told us of their intentions to close its doors. As the spark grew we all wondered who was the right person to lead the rest. Kathryn, who was on spring break at the time from the University of Madison, became enthralled by the notion of keeping the local fiber spirit going and, although the most unlikely candidate, became the only candidate to take on the position. After much thinking and contemplating, Ewetopia’s doors opened on July 7th, 2007. With a new location closer to downtown then the previous shop, Ewetopia has had a wonderful start and will continue to grow and be a place for fiber artists and those just beginning to feel the creative urge to come and gather.
Kathryn
Kathryn learned to knit in 1st grade at Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School in Viroqua, Wisconsin, and, since then, knitting has always played an important role. After she learned to spin on her mother’s spinning wheel in 2005, fiber became her life. Quickly after that she had reason to purchase three bred Merino ewes that over the course of two years have grown to a small flock of ten including a Border Leicester ram. Kathryn now tries to balance herself between getting her undergraduate degree in Rural Sociology at the University of Madison and her beloved yarn shop. Kathryn plans to move back to Viroqua permanently after graduating in the spring (2008) to start a small dairy farm with her fiancé as well as to grow her small flock of sheep and spend as much time as possible at the shop! Plans for a small wool processing mill are also starting to develop, which is where her true passion lies -- having a hand in the product process from sheep to yarn! If you see Kathryn at the shop and she is not knitting something white and lacey please remind her that her wedding dress has a deadline of September!
